KHARTOUM, April 3 () -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Tuesday said the attack against the oil fields in Higlieg area on Sudan-South Sudan border was an attempt to tarnish Sudan's image, official SUNA news agency reported.The agency quoted al-Bashir as saying that "the recent attack on the oil fields in Higlieg was not but attempts to tarnishing Sudan's image and reputation despite our keenness on peace and stability.""We will not relinquish our land and we will protect it with our souls in defend of the faith and the homeland and in defend of our accomplishments and gains of our people and our partners in development and investment," added the Sudanese president.Military clashes erupted last week between Sudan and South Sudan armies at Higlieg area in South Kordofan State on the border between the two countries.Sudan and South Sudan have failed to demarcate their joint border and dispute over many border areas including Jao which witnessed armed clashes on Feb. 26 in addition to the Abyei area.Sudan and South Sudan on Feb. 10 signed a "Non-aggression Deal" to avoid an armed conflict between the two sides.The agreement, which was reached under the African Union mediation in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, stipulated that each side should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the other, not to intervene in the other's internal affairs, refrain from use of force and observe common interests and peaceful co-existence.
SANAA, July 9 () -- Yemeni soldiers who supported anti- government protests last year freed a senior military officer who were kidnapped last month over salary freeze, an official said on Monday.Brigadier General Murad al-Awbali, commander of the 62nd brigade of the Republican Guards, was snatched on June 28 at a checkpoint, which was manned by angry soldiers in the eastern outskirts of the capital Sanaa.Al-Awbali, a loyalist to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and his son Ahmed heading the well-equipped Republican Guards, " was set free overnight after some tribal mediators pledged to the angry soldiers that their frozen salaries will be soon released and that they will be allowed to resume their duties," the Republican Guard official told anonymously.Thousands of soldiers broke ranks and joined in anti-government protests that eventually forced Saleh to step down and transfer power to his deputy Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in February this year, under a deal brokered by neighboring Gulf states.Thousands of the defected soldiers ended the mutiny and returned to their units after Hadi sacked several commanders two months ago as part of the power transfer deal to reform the army.The transitional president has also vowed to the reunify divided armed forces to focus efforts on fighting rampant al-Qaida militants in the southern regions of the impoverished Arab country.

ABUJA, June 18 () -- The Nigerian police has confirmed that 16 people were killed when three churches were attacked by suicide bombers on Sunday in northwestern Kaduna State, according to a statement made available to on Monday.The statement confirmed that the 16 persons included the suicide bomber and eight others who died at the ECWA Church in Wusasa, three at the Christ the King Catholic Church (CKC) in Zaria and four others at the Shalom Pentecostal Church in Bypass axis of the state.The statement was not specific about figure of the injured victims of the multiple attacks but rescue workers in the state confirmed that over 41 people were being attended to in four health facilities across the metropolis, including Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital, Zaria and St. Louis Hospital, Wusasa.Meanwhile, the West African country's acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Abubakar has ordered massive deployment of police personnel in Kaduna State to restore calm, following the bomb attacks.Pockets of violence had also spread across the city as irate Christian youths reportedly took to the streets in form of a reprisal attack, protesting the spate of bombings, killing and wanton destruction of properties by suicide bombers in the state.According to the security chief, the police and other law enforcement agencies will not sit back and watch such people put the life of innocent citizens in jeopardy."As part of efforts to restore normalcy in the state, Suleiman Fakai, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) who coordinates police operations in the northwest has immediately moved to Kaduna to personally coordinate police operations in the state," he said.The Kaduna State government had on Sunday imposed a dusk-to- dawn curfew on the citizens to curtail irate Christian youths in various parts of the city.In a statement made available to , the state governor, Patrick Yakowa condemned the attacks and admonished the citizens to strictly adhere to the curfew."Government regrets the inconveniences this drastic measure will cause to all and sundry, but the state government considers this to be necessary in other to avert further lost of lives and properties in the state again," he said, while urging the security agencies to enforce compliance with immediate effect.
HARARE, March 8 () -- Zimbabwe's platinum mining giant, Zimplats, on Thursday said it was committed to the finalization of the indigenization and economic empowerment program through continuous engagement with relevant stakeholders.Under the indigenization and economic empowerment program, the government and Zimplats have been engaged in negotiations meant to achieve full compliance. However, the process has taken longer time than anticipated.Briefing the indigenization and empowerment thematic committee which paid a visit to the mining site in Ngezi, Zimplats's chief finance officer Patrick Shayawabaya said the company was currently engaging shareholders in a bid to comply with the law of the land.Chairperson of the thematic committee and senator Monica Mutsvangwa said there was need for big mining firms such as Zimplats to list on the local bourse so that the country's citizens could benefit from their natural resources.According to state-run ZBC News, Zimplats shareholders will meet this Friday to seek ways of fully complying with the indigenization and empowerment law.The Zimbabwean government promulgated the indigenization law in May 2011, forcing foreign mining companies to transfer their shares to a government fund.However, the South African mining company Impala Platinum, the world's second largest platinum producer, refused to transfer shares of its Zimbabwean subsidiary Zimplats.Despite warnings that mining companies operating in Zimbabwe might get their production licenses withdrawn, Zimplats kept on ignoring Government orders.Last year, Minister of Youth Development, Indigenization and Empowerment Savior Kasukuwere warned Zimplats of possible consequences if the company continued to oppose official regulations.
MONTEVIDEO, Dec. 23 () -- Uruguay's Foreign Minister Luis Almagro Friday defended his country's decision to ban ships from Malvinas Islands (called Falkland Islands in Britain) from docking at Uruguayan ports.Almagro told reporters he had talked with his British counterpart William Hague by telephone about Uruguay's decision to close its ports to ships flying the flag of Malvinas Islands. The decision was approved by member countries of Mercosur (the Common Market of the South) days ago."To recognize Malvinas' flag would be to also recognize British jurisdiction and sovereignty (over the islands)," said Almagro.At the 42nd Mercosur summit earlier this month, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay agreed to close their ports to ships which fly the flag of the British-controlled Malvinas Islands, whose sovereignty is disputed by Argentina. The ban was made at the request from the Argentinian government.Almagro said Uruguay's decision to ban the Islands' ships was based on his country's "historic position on the Malvinas," Uruguayan daily "El Observador" reported.The minister also said his country "has no problems with ships of other flags travelling between Montevideo and Malvinas."During his telephone conversation with Almagro, Hague expressed his "disagreement" and "worry" for the measure adopted by Uruguay and Mercosur, the British embassy in Montevideo said in a statement.The British statement also said the conversation was "cordial and constructive" and that London was "hopeful of a satisfactory solution."Argentina was defeated by Britain in a 74-day war in 1982 over the sovereignty of the disputed islands, which are close to Argentine coasts and far away from Britain.Tensions over the islands have mounted recently due to intensified oil exploration activities in their vicinity.
