SUVA, June 27 () -- The three-day Pacific trade expo, or the Trade Pasifika 2012, concluded at the Sheraton Hotel in Fiji' s western tourist town of Nadi on Wednesday, highlighting that there is a demand for Pacific Island farm produces in niche markets overseas. The event provided an opportunity for some 50 Pacific entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services as well as interact with trade specialists during the event and the specially designed panel discussions and exporters attending the event were urged to take advantage of the opportunities.Speaking at the panel discussion on Wednesday, Pacific Islands Trade and Invest's Trade Commissioner in China Sam Savou said there was an export window for pawpaw from the Pacific in the Chinese winter season."Off season pawpaw can fetch 60 Fiji dollars (about 34.3 US dollars) a kilo in China, while off season hybrid mangoes can sell for 40 Fiji dollars (22.85 US dollars) per kilo. We can tap into this market," he said, urging the exporters to work with their governments to promote the development of bilateral agricultural export protocols with China.Teremoana Mato from the Pacific Islands Trade and Invest's Auckland Office shared some success stories of agricultural exports reintegrating the New Zealand market. He said that the pineapples from Fiji and pawpaw from Cook Islands were being brought back onto the NZ market."There are opportunities on the New Zealand market for value added Pacific products like desiccated coconut and gluten free flour. Here at Trade Pasifika 2012 we have met up with an exporter who produces gluten-free flour," said Mato.Jeremy Granell from the Pacific Island Trade and Invest's Australia Office also said that there was a huge potential for health driven products in Australia which were sold in specialty shops. He shared the success story of a type of cocoa from Papua New Guinea (PNG) that was developed for the gourmet chocolate market, saying the distributer from Australia visited the PNG farmers and worked with them to get the product he wanted. The resulting product was branded and marketed and is now fetching premium price.Robyn Ekstrom, the Trade Promotion Adviser at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat's Geneva (WTO) Office said that there were opportunities for coconut sugar, certified wood, certified seafood, art, soft furnishing and ornamental fish on the European market. At the panel discussion the issue of consistent and quality supply of produce from the Pacific was raised as well as packaging and labeling. It was highlighted that a consistent and quality supply was important to secure markets. Exporters also heard that certifications were necessary to get access to markets.Kaliopate Tavola, Chairperson of the Trade Pasifika 2012 Organizing Committee said he received positive feedback on the event. "We have proven that the concept of Trade Pasifika can work. I have had feedback that there were many linkages made and good networks established at Trade Pasifika 2012."The event has been organized by the Pacific Island Private Sector organization (PIPSO) with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Pacific Centre, Secretariat of the Pacific community (SPC), AusAID's Pacific Leadership Program, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, private sector representatives and the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG).
NAIROBI, Dec. 17 () -- Kenya's military said on Saturday the integration of its forces with the Africa Union Peace keeping Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops will not affect its war against the Al-Shabaab militia.Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Operations Commander, Colonel Cyrus Oguna told journalists in Nairobithat the re-hatting of the KDF will not take away the right of Kenya to defend itself and will pursue the insurgent group whenever necessary."When faced with aggression even after integrating with AMISOM, our troops will go and deal with it and come back," Oguna told journalists at the weekly press briefing in Nairobi.Kenya's Parliament has already endorsed the government's decision to allow the Kenya Defense Forces to join AMISOM as part of the pan African body's strategy to combat Al- Shabaab.Oguna said the KDF, which launched ground and air strikes across southern Somalia in mid October, will carry out its military operation deeper into rebel-held territory of Afgoye. He said the troops would target Afgoye, a town near Mogadishu and home to thousands of displaced people, as well as the ports of Merka and Barawe on the southern coast. The development to join AMISOM follows the unanimous vote in Parliament two weeks ago. Kenya is joining the force at the invitation of the African Union.Oguna said KDF troops registered major gains in the past week where they inflicted major damage to Al-Shabaab following six engagements with the outfit last Tuesday in Gabra Garso and two attacks at Afmadow Airstrip where their command structure was destroyed.Linsay Kiptenes, the deputy director in charge of the Horn of Africa Region at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed Kenya' s concern at the events of last week where over 280 members of the Somali Parliament removed the speaker at a time the Transitional Federal Government is enjoying unprecedented good will from the international community."This action, coming only eight months away from the end of the transition period next August will affect the Road Map and every effort must be made to curb such incidents. The whole world has rallied behind the people of Somalia and they should therefore not fight amongst themselves lest they played into the hands of the enemy."Kipteness said Kenya will participate at an African Union meeting next Monday where the re-hatting of the Kenyan troops to AMISOM will be extensively discussed so as to make the operation an AU/UN issue by seeking for endorsement from the United Nation' sSecurity Council so as not to make the Kenyan troops appear like an occupation force.
