We need peace more than anything else because without it, our schools, utility services, hospitals and all other institutions will not be useful. We need a politically healthy nation to enjoy our national wealth," he stated.Osahene Kwaku Anterkyi II, Kukuomhene and President of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, appealed to traditional authorities to be abreast with the customs and laws governing the chieftaincy institution in Ghana. He referred them to the Section 57 of the chieftaincy Act of 2008, Act 759, that defines a chief as "a person hailing from the appropriate family and lineage, who has been validly nominated, elected or selected and enstooled, enskinned or installed as a chief or queenmother in accordance with relevant law and usage".He urged them to be conversant with other provisions of the Act, and stressed the need for every chief or queenmother in Ghana to have his or her name registered in the register at the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital.Osahene Anterkyi advised chiefs, as leaders of their communities to see that the men and women as well as the youth of their areas felt comfortable to stay there by ensuring adequate security for the people and the lands they occupied. He also advised traditional authorities to, in the interest of peace, use the Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism to settle major disputes like family problems, chieftaincy misunderstandings, and land settlements. The Chairman for the function, Oseeadeeyo Osagyefo Agyeman Badu II, Omanhene of Dormaa Traditional Area in the brong Ahafo Region, commended Beyeeman on his achievements and contributions towards the development of the Drobo State, Brong Ahafo region and the country as a whole. He observed that the chieftaincy institution was based principally on custom and culture which must be strictly enforced.
DHAKA, May 27 () -- A High Court Division bench of Bangladesh Sunday granted ad-interim bail for six months to five opposition alliance lawmakers accused of torching a vehicle during a dawn-to-dusk hartal last month. The bench also issued a rule upon Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina' s government to explain in a week why the other accused including main opposition party's Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 39 others should not be granted bail.On May 16, Fakhrul and 32 other leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party alliance were sent to jail in connection with the case after they surrendered before a trial court.BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Joint Secretary-General Mahbub Uddin Khokon, a lawmaker, and six other leaders and workers were also sent in jail in the same case.A total of 45 leaders and workers of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's BNP-led 18-party alliance were accused in the case for torching a vehicle on a main road near the Prime Minister's Office during hartal hours on April 29.Khaleda's BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced countrywide hartals during April 22-24 and April 29-30 to protest the " mysterious disappearance" of Elias Ali, the organizing secretary of the party, who along with his driver went missing on the night of April 17.Although Khaleda, also BNP chairperson, blames the government for Ali's "mysterious disappearance," her arch political rival Hasina, also ruling party Bangladesh Awami League chief, said this is nothing but a conspiracy hatched by the opposition party leader to make it an issue for anti-government agitation.
