by Mike Cormack    BEIJING, Aug. 2 (net) -- If New York is famously known as a "melting pot" of nationalities, Beijing must surely be a hotpot, simmering nicely with people from all corners of the earth.    One way to observe the truth of this is regarding sports, particularly football, still (despite the Chinese NBA craze) the most popular sport in the world. The recent South African World Cup might have been the ultimate exemplar of international footballing, but Beijing's ClubFootball is a fine example of this most international of sports crossing national boundaries.    Mid-week, should you venture into Chaoyang Park after 7 pm, you can find a veritable United Nations of footballers slugging it out under the floodlights and competing on the park's eight 5-a-side pitches.    Now in its 10th year of organizing amateur football in Beijing, ClubFootball is a mix of men, women and children. The recently completed men's spring league, for example, had almost 100 teams (with names such as "Chuarcelona" and "Beijing Vikings") divided into nine leagues, and more than 1,000 players aged 16-64 from more than 80 countries.    The teams come from various backgrounds, such as NGOs operating in Beijing, groups of friends, representatives of a single nation, or individuals who have joined and been welcomed into a pre-existing team.    Of this rainbow of backgrounds and abilities, Chinese players have an ever-increasing presence, presently contributing one-third of the players to the most recent league.    The league system, letting players find a suitable level, fosters a competitive but non-aggressive spirit; referees unobtrusively officiate each match and the Corinthian ideals of fair play and honest endeavor are routinely observed.                   1 2      1 2

COLOMBO, Aug. 5 () -- Sri Lanka's government planned to build an international sports complex in the former Tamil Tiger rebel capital of Kilnochchi in the island's north, a minister said on Friday.Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage told reporters that they already laid the foundation story for the sports complex and it would be completed within next three years. He said the project would cost 2.9 million U.S. dollars and it is the first such facility to be established in the war-affected areas."The government launched several programs to develop the northern and eastern provinces after ending the longstanding war in 2009, but this is the first initiative to develop the sports facilities there," Aluthgamage said. The minister said the sports complex will include eight running tracks and an indoor stadium which is capable of having various sports activities.Aluthgamage said at present Sri Lanka has only one such facility in the capital Colombo and the government is planning to establish another in Hambantota in the deep south.
LONDON, Nov. 24 () -- The mass strike by up to 2 million British workers set for Nov. 30 looks set to go ahead on Thursday when a leading member of the government said there was "no more money on the table" to meet the demands of trades unions.British public sector workers are angry at government plans to reform pensions, which would make them "pay more, receive less and work longer." During negotiation with the government, trades unions have rejected an offer that would exempt those retire within 10 years. One of the leading government negotiators, Cabinet minister Danny Alexander, told journalists on Thursday that "there was no more money on the table, there is no better offer up my sleeve."Alexander, the chief secretary to the Treasury, has been one of the two leading government negotiators with representatives of the unions about pensions for eight months. An improved offer was made at the beginning of the month, which would have delayed the introduction date of the reforms and increasing the rate at which pensions grew. This offer was rejected by the unions, who said it was inadequate.Prime Minister David Cameron criticized the union leaders."Everyone should be clear there is going to be disruption and the responsibility for that disruption lies squarely with the trades union leaders who have decided on a strike while negotiations are on-going. I think that is irresponsible, I think that is wrong," he said. The coalition government's plan to reform public sector pensions is part of its bid to reduce the public sector spending deficit, the amount of money the government needs beyond its tax and revenue income to fund services.Municipal authority workers in libraries, rubbish dumps, IT, administration, hospitals, and schools among other areas will all be joining workers from other public bodies including central government in the one-day strike. The government estimates that up to two thirds of Britain's schools could be closed, and that the disruption to the economy caused by parents having to stay off work to look after their children could be significant.

RAMALLAH June 4 () -- A Palestinian official on Monday accused the Israeli government of "legitimizing" Jewish settlement on occupied Palestinian land in the recent dispute of five Jewish outposts in the West Bank."The policies of the current Israeli government are based on one thing: expanding the settlements to prevent the establishment of an independent Palestinian state," said Yasser Abed Rabbo, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization's (PLO) Executive Committee. "There is nothing left for the Palestinians but to go to the Security Council and all the United Nations bodies to condemn the settlement," Abed Rabbo added. The PLO official also criticized the international tone in dealing with Israel's settlement plans, and urged the international community to "intervene effectively to make a breakthrough on the (Palestinian-Israeli) peace process."Israel's Supreme Court ordered the government to demolish five outposts built by Jewish settlers on West Bank land claimed by Palestinians as privately owned. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu presented a plan to reallocate the houses to the nearby Beit El settlement, and several ministers of his government supported the plan. However, many political leaders in Israel are against the demolition plan, arguing that the settlers bought the land through legal procedures.Israeli settlement construction in occupied Palestinian land is the most disputed issue in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. Differences on the issue broke down their peace talks in 2010.Special Report: Palestine-Israel Conflicts
