by Ntandoyenkosi NcubeJOHANNESBURG, Jan. 21() -- Ousted Madagascan President Marc Ravalomanana has failed to return home for the second time after his plane was barred from landing on Saturday.Ravalomanana ended in Mozambique after his plane was ordered to divert destination by the Malagasy authorities.Ravalomanana's attempt to end his exile life also hit a snag after Malagasy authorities intervened."Madagascar civil aviation has turned the plane around and it's been diverted to Pemba in Mozambique. It doesn't have enough fuel to return all the way. It will refuel there and then return to Johannesburg," his spokesperson Peter Mann Saturday said in Johannesburg.A Malagasy government minister confirmed that the plane, which earlier departed from South Africa, had turned around but said the reasons were unknown.Ravalomanana has lived in Johannesburg since he was overthrown in a coup by army-backed Andry Rajoelina in March 2009.Late last year South Africa said elections in crisis-hit Madagascar could be held this year or early next year but African conflicts prevention experts said the "environment is not conducive" and called for regional bodies to ensure a proper government is instituted before any move towards election.Institute for Security Studies (ISS), African Conflicts Prevention Programme Senior Researcher, David Zounmenou said there are several "initiatives" that must be taken before election happens in Antananarivo.
BEIJING, July 10 () -- The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) said Tuesday to monitor several medications produced by Swiss pharmaceutical Roche for possible adverse reactions.The SFDA issued a statement after a European Medicines Agency investigation revealed that Roche failed to report adverse reactions to some of its drugs. About 15,000 patient deaths have been possibly tied to such reactions.The SFDA has asked the company to report details of the reactions and will closely follow development of the case, the statement said.Five of the eight medications, for treating cancers and a liver disease, involved in the investigation are sold in China, the SFDA said.The SFDA monitoring network has not yet reported abnormal cases related to the medications, the statement said.In a statement on Roche China's website, the firm said the adverse reactions that resulted in deaths all occurred in the United States, claiming that there has been no impact on safety of its products based on current assessments.The company said it would cooperate with the Chinese government in related inquiries and possible investigations.
